Rootbound - www.rootboundmusic.com
Rootbound is a duo based in the old-time, mandolin, guitar, and two voices tradition, but with contemporary touches. We try to make the old songs sound new, but also look for new songs that sound old, if you know what I mean. The group consists of Henry Koretzky on mandolin and vocals and Deb Kauffmann on rhythm guitar and vocals. Deb lives in Glen Rock, PA, and has recently begun performing with Ginny Hawker & Tracy Schwarz, as well as with the all femail string band Ladies in the parlor. Henry, from Harrisburg, PA, has played bluegrass with Cornerstone (from Ithaca, NY) and two Pennsylvania bands, Sweetwater Reunion and High Strung, as well as playing klezmer, swing, and accompanying singer/songwriters. He also currently plays in the old-time contradance band The Contra Rebels. Rootbound has a 15-song CD, from which this track is taken, available from http://www.cdbaby.com. This song, written by Henry, is a contemporary take on the murder ballad tradition, attempting to give the victim a voice.
